Suseong-gu originated from Wehwa-gun (also called Sangchonchang-gun) during the Silla Dynasty, and King Gyeongdeok later renamed it Suchang-gun.
In the early Goryeo Dynasty, it was renamed Suseong-gun and became affiliated with Gyeongju in the 9th year of King Hyunjong’s reign (1018). In the 2nd year of the rule of King Gongyang, a local administrative officer, called Gammu, was appointed to govern this district along with Haean-hyun (Haean-hyun belonged to Gyeongjuimnae, but the specific period thereof is not known).
At the 3rd year of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty (1394), this district was administrated in addition to Daegu. Based on historical research that this district became affiliated with Daeguimnae as Suseonghyunsa in 1419, it was given the name “Suseongya” (currently divided into Hwanggeum-dong and Dusan-dong as a result of urban development) to form the main center of the area under the jurisdiction of the district office. On April 1, 1980, it was officially named Suseong-gu when districts were zoned under the “gu” system.
On July 1, 1981, when Daegu City grew to be a city under the direct control of the central government, Suseong-gu expanded its scope by incorporating Gosan-myeon in Gyeongsan-gun.
